BizInsight@HKUST [Lunch Presentation Series] Creative Fixers in Organization: FinTech Internal Innovation
Realizing the pressing need to stay competitive, many companies are examining the value of embracing Financial Technology (FinTech) and building a culture of innovation in the dynamic marketplace. Professor Hilton Chan and Professor Gong Yaping will discuss these two creative fixers to help your organizations stay ahead of the curve.
Building Algo-trading Library and DIY Robo-traders
Traditionally, we rely on “finance experts” or “licensed professionals” to manage our investment portfolios and trading strategies. According to data provided by Bank of America, only 19% of large-cap mutual fund managers beat their respective benchmarks in 2016. Only 7% of growth funds managed to beat their benchmarks of the Russell 1000 growth index, which returned 7% for the year. Various sources indicated that over 70% of trading activities around the world were algo-trading, robo-trading, program-trading, automated-trading, etc.
In his talk, Professor Hilton Chan will discuss how we can use FinTech to easily build and test DIY Robo-traders and their Algo-strategies with better performance and risk-control than Human-traders. He will also look into if Robo-Trader is an IT or financial solution and what are the pros and cons.
Let One Hundred Flowers Blossom: Employee Creativity in Organizations
Creativity is the foundation of organization innovations that enable firms to compete in the dynamic marketplace. In his talk, Professor Gong Yaping will present research-based findings on what promote or inhibit employee creativity. He will discuss key motivational, knowledge, and skill drivers of employee creativity. They include intrinsic motivation, creativity skills, observing, questioning, networking, associating, and experimenting, as well as important work environment factors, such as leader tolerance of failure, time pressure, workday design, and autonomy, that facilitate or inhibit creativity.
