Adaptive learning, navigating diversity, and social networks are critical for decision making, interpersonal and team effectiveness, and investment opportunities, respectively. In this webinar by Department of Management, Prof Ellick Wong will talk about how adaptive learning will actually lead to sub-optimal decisions and how this can be avoided; Prof Melody Chao will explore how our mindsets and environmental factors influence our ease in managing diversity; lastly Prof Pavel Zhelyazkov will provide an overview of his research on how social networks shape venture capital (VC) firms’ syndication activities as well as access to deals and capital.

How perfect learning may lead to making sub-optimal decisions.
Good learners are those who can adjust their behaviors according to environmental feedback. This adjustment, which is called adaptive learning, is the essential component in human and machine learning. In this presentation, Prof Ellick Wong will discuss how adaptive learning will lead to sub-optimal decisions, and how this bias can be avoided

From Mindsets to Cultural Competence
With increase in global connectivity, the ability to navigate diverse workforce is seen as an important asset. Cultural competence refers to the ability to adapt and function efficiently in a diverse setting. In this presentation, Prof Melody Chao will explore how our mindsets (i.e., beliefs) and environmental factors influence our ease in managing diversity.

Role of Social Relationships in VC Syndication and Fundraising
In this presentation, Prof Pavel Zhelyazkov will provide an overview of his research on how social networks shape venture capital (VC) firms’ syndication activities as well as access to deals and capital. In particular, he will examine how a VC firms’ behavior within syndicates shapes its access to subsequent investment opportunities; and how indirect social relationships between institutional investors and VC firms shape the former’s investment decisions.
