Prof David Lam Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in Hong Kong. In a major step forward for diagnosis and monitoring of the devastating eye condition, HKUST material scientist and engineer Prof David Lam and his research team have turned a soft sensor into a "smart" contact lens that can assist doctors in measuring eye pressure at the optimum time - when patients are asleep. Here, Prof Lam introduces the novel telemedical device and its benefits. These advantages include allowing patients to return home after fitting the lens, remote access to data by medical personnel and the use of artificial intelligence in processing the data for diagnoses. The smart contact lens can also release drugs to treat eye diseases. |
